RVA Pediatrics offers Lactation Services at all 3 Locations!
Breastfeeding offers premium nutrition to your baby but can be challenging at times. An experienced lactation consultant supports your feeding choices and can make a huge difference in your breastfeeding success.
We offer services for families of all experience-levels; from first-time parents to ones who may just need a refresher.
According to the AAP, moms who receive support have more success in breastfeeding. The lactation team at RVA Pediatrics is here to provide that support.
Introducing our Team
- Tammy Rockwell RN, IBCLC joined the staff in 2016 to work with breastfeeding families at RVA Pediatrics. A nurse since 1981, Tammy has a deep interest in helping new families and has specialized in lactation support for the last fifteen years. Tammy works out of our Patterson location.
- Thornton Beale, CPNP IBCLC joined the practice in 2016 and was certified as an IBCLC fall 2019. She enjoys working with breastfeeding dyads and helping mother’s to achieve their breastfeeding goals.
- Kirsten Slagle, CPNP, CLC joined the practice in 2009, and received her CLC training in 2018. She enjoys working with the family as a whole to help support each of them and achieve their individual breastfeeding goals.
- Liz Jones IBCLC joined the practice in 2013. She received her IBCLC certification in December 2019. She enjoys helping moms find individualized breastfeeding routines that work with the family’s needs. She is eager to support mothers in the eir transition back to work while continuing to reach their breastfeeding goals.

We offer a monthly new mom’s group and are available at every prenatal party for questions.
PRENATAL CONSULTATIONS
Meet before your delivery to help design a breastfeeding plan and address your specific concerns.
~ New and experienced moms may find this helpful.
LACTATION CONSULTATIONS
During this 1-2 hour visit our lactation consultants:
- Gather your medical and breastfeeding history
- Assesses the baby’s oral motor skills
- Observes an entire breastfeeding session
- Coaching and tips for a comfortable latch are offered
- A written breastfeeding plan is given, to help you continue your success at home
- Your baby is weighed before and after feeding
- Allow plenty of time to answer all of your questions!

- Your breast pump

BACK-TO-WORK AND BREASTFEEDING CONSULTATIONS

Sometimes you just need a quick answer!
- General breastfeeding questions and advice (for example: “How do I pump for storage?” or “ Help! My baby has teeth!”) can usually be answered by phone.
